Moroccan Street Vendor’s Self-Immolation Sparks Protests Against Local Authorities

Yassine, a young street vendor, set himself on fire on July 28 in Sidi Bennour and did not survive his injuries. He was protesting against the confiscation of his stall by the local authorities. His death sparked demonstrations.
Admitted to a hospital in El Jadida, the health of the young street vendor deteriorated, local media report. He was then transferred to an intensive care unit for major burns in Casablanca, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A wave of outrage has swept social media after the young man’s death. Internet users have launched the hashtag "We are all Yassine", in Arabic. Hundreds of young people organized demonstrations in Sidi Bennour to denounce the abuse of power by the local authorities and demand the opening of an investigation.
