Moroccan Lawmaker Demands Probe into Olympic Disappointment, Calls for Sports Reform

The poor performance of Moroccan athletes at the Paris Olympics continues to stir up controversy. Deputy Abdellatif Zaim of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) has just questioned the Minister of Sports on this subject.
In a question addressed to Chakib Benmoussa, Zaim called for an in-depth investigation to identify the responsibilities after the disappointing participation of Moroccan athletes in the Paris Olympics. The MP also wished for the implementation of a reform in the sports sector in order to hope for better results from Moroccan athletes in their next participations in international competitions.
Despite the considerable investments made by the government and the National Olympic Committee, Moroccan athletes were not up to expectations, regretted the deputy, noting that Morocco returned from the Paris Olympics with only two medals: the gold won by Soufiane El Bakkali in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, and the bronze won by the Olympic football team. Zaim questioned the reasons for this poor performance, suspecting difficulties in the preparation of the athletes.
In a recent statement, Hassan Fekkak, technical director of the National Olympic Committee, for his part congratulated the Moroccan athletes for the two medals obtained at the Olympics, ignoring the failures in other disciplines such as tennis, taekwondo and boxing. Words that have provoked strong reactions on the web. Former Olympic champion Nawal El Moutawakel harshly criticized Fekkak’s remarks, expressing her dissatisfaction with the performance of Moroccan athletes compared to previous editions.
