Moroccan Journalist Denied Release in Controversial Abortion Case

The Court of First Instance in Rabat examined the request for provisional release of Hajar Raïssouni, the journalist who is in detention, in particular for "illegal abortion". To say the least, the court’s verdict does not improve the journalist’s situation.
A flat-out rejection was opposed to the request for release filed by the defense of the Akhbar Al Yaoum journalist. This court decision extends Hajar Raïssouni’s detention.
To justify this choice, the court argued that "the facts attributed to Hajar Raïssouni are ’very serious’, and that the guarantees presented for her release are ’insufficient’".
During the hearing on Monday, September 16, the court had decided to postpone the trial to September 23. Several other people are being prosecuted in this same case, including the journalist’s fiancé, a gynecologist, his assistant and an anesthesia technician.
