Moroccan Journalist Sentenced to One Year for Abortion and Premarital Sex

We now know the verdict in this case that has sparked the most heated controversy in recent weeks. On Monday, September 30, the Court of First Instance in Rabat sentenced Hajar Raïssouni to one year in prison, for "sexual relations outside of marriage and illegal abortion".
In addition to the journalist, the gynecologist was sentenced to 2 years in prison, with a 2-year ban on practicing.
As for the other co-defendants, namely the doctor’s assistant and the anesthesia technician, they each received an 8-month suspended prison sentence.
In this case that has focused the world’s attention on Morocco for several weeks, the Court of First Instance in Rabat also ruled that all the prosecuted persons will pay a fine of 500 dirhams.
This verdict comes after marathon hearings devoted to the presentation of the defense’s formal requests and the arguments of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. They were also marked by tensions due to the mobilization of several civil society associations.
