Moroccan Islamist Party Pushes Bill to Ban Dual Nationals from Cabinet Positions

The Party of Justice and Development (PJD) led by Abdelilah Benkirane no longer wants Moroccans with other nationalities to enter the government. It has initiated a bill to this effect and tabled it in the House of Representatives.

A bill to, among other things, prevent Moroccans with other nationalities and persons not enjoying their civil and political rights from being part of the government. This is the new battle of the PJD parliamentarians. They made three proposals to amend the organic law on the organization and conduct of government work and the legal status of its members. The first concerns the amendment of Article 31.

The second proposed amendment relates to the modification of Article 33. The PJD deputies propose that all members of the government sell all the shares they hold, including companies, contractors and private establishments, reports Hespress. According to them, ministers should cease any professional or commercial activity in the private sector during the period of their exercise of their functions.

The third proposed amendment concerns Article 35 and stipulates the need to settle the status of each member of Parliament in a state of conflict within a period not exceeding 30 days from the date of appointment of the government by the House of Representatives, or from the date of appointment of the member of the government concerned, as the case may be.
