Morocco’s Human Rights Council Urges Lawmakers to Strengthen Laws Against Marital Rape and Violence Against Women

The officials of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) were at the parliament on Wednesday to explain to the deputies the need to harmonize the law on violence against women with criminal law and the Family Code.
This session, which took place in the presence of the thematic commission responsible for evaluating the circumstances and conditions of application of law 103.13 on the fight against violence against women, allowed the CNDH to insist on the need to ensure that the law on violence against women is in line with what is stipulated in the international agreements ratified by Morocco.
For the Council, the entire system needs to be reviewed, and provide victims of violence such as sexual harassment, marital rape the means to report these abuses. During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the lack of a good policy for the protection of battered women. The passive complicity of the neighborhood, unable to report incidents of violence, was mentioned. In this sense, the CNDH calls for more awareness-raising on the criminal nature of these abuses suffered by women.
The thematic working group responsible for evaluating the conditions for the implementation or application of the law on the fight against violence against women must continue its consultations with other civil society and government officials. The objective is to produce a report that will be submitted to the office of the House of Representatives.
