Moroccan Islamist Party PJD Seeks Larger Share of Political Funding

The Party of Justice and Development (PJD) is currently fighting to try to seize a large share of the public subsidies dedicated to political parties.
The PJD has defined discriminatory criteria with a view to stifling small political formations to take the lion’s share. The eyes of all political parties are turned to the Ministry of the Interior for the granting of a subsidy, pending those they are to receive to finance the election campaigns of the 2021 elections.
According to Assabah, the PJD proposes to the Ministry of the Interior to retain only the results of the last legislative, municipal and regional elections as the sole determining criterion for the distribution of public subsidies. Conversely, the small political parties are asking for a fair distribution, which will be oriented towards awareness-raising and supervision actions in favor of women, youth and the acquisition of premises in the regions. Public subsidies are intended for political parties to renew their elites, in the process of democratic transition.
Faced with the situation that could be described as the PJD’s desire to take control of the subsidies, several proposals have been made. These include the creation of a media for each political party, the creation of a legal framework to legalize the support of businessmen to political actors, with tax deduction as a counterpart, the self-financing of political parties through the possibility of investing in projects.
With a view to equipping political parties with competent executives to meet the challenges of development, partnerships with universities and structures with expertise in the field of training have been proposed.
