Moroccan Parties Vie for $35 Million in Election Subsidies Ahead of 2021 Vote

A few months before the legislative elections, political parties are putting pressure on the government of Saâdeddine El Othmani to obtain state subsidies. The financial windfall is around 350 million DH.
A frantic race to obtain public subsidies? Opposition parties in particular are already claiming their share of the state subsidies released as part of the 2021 legislative elections to finance the election campaign. During separate meetings with the Head of Government, Saâdeddine El Othmani, the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, they expressed this demand, Maghreb Intelligence reported.
The government has released 350 million dirhams as public subsidies. An amount higher than that disbursed for the 2016 legislative elections. The amount was 250 million dirhams. This increase could be justified by the health crisis related to the coronavirus which continues to rage.
In Morocco, the parliamentary, group and regional elections are expected to take place on Wednesday, September 8, while those of the members of the House of Advisors are expected to take place on Tuesday, October 5.
