Morocco Allocates 360 Million Dirhams for Political Parties and Unions Ahead of 2021 Elections

360 million dirhams, this is the total amount granted by the State to political parties, as well as to trade union centers for the financing of election campaigns. The decision, which has just been made public in the Official Bulletin, provides details for each election scheduled for next September and October, where Morocco must renew all elected bodies.

This concerns in particular the legislative, municipal and regional elections scheduled for the same day of September 8, 2021, as well as the elections of the Chamber of Advisors in early October. The trade unions are also taken into account, with regard to their results in the last election, indicates Aujourd’hui Le Maroc, specifying that the largest share, i.e. 160 million dirhams of public subsidies, goes to the legislative elections.

Regarding the municipal and regional elections, the State contributes 180 million dirhams. In detail, 100 million dirhams are planned for the municipal elections; 80 million dirhams for the regional elections; a lump sum of 750,000 dirhams is allocated to political parties; the State’s contribution to the Chamber of Advisors elections is 20 million dirhams, of which 12 million dirhams for political parties and 8 million dirhams granted to trade union organizations.

The advance granted to each political party is set according to the amount received as part of the annual public subsidy received for the last year preceding the date of the election. As for the aid to trade union organizations, they are calculated on the basis of their results in the last professional elections in the public and private sectors.

To recall, according to the final results presented by the government, non-affiliated candidates came out on top in the elections of employee representatives in the public and private sectors for the year 2021, with 24,429 delegates, or 51.35%. The Moroccan Labor Union (UMT) occupied the second position with 7,362 delegates (15.48%), followed by the General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM), which has 5,977 delegates (12.56%), and the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT), which came out with 3,423 delegates (7.20%). In fifth position, we find the National Union of Labor in Morocco (UNMT) (2,680/5.63%), ahead of the Democratic Federation of Labor (FDT, 1,326/2.79%), the Democratic Organization of Labor (ODT, 560/1.18%) and other unions (1,816/3.82%).
