Moroccan Islamist Party Halts Comments on Israel After Royal Rebuke

The Justice and Development Party (PJD) will not react to the Royal Cabinet statement on Israel, published on Monday. This is the announcement made by its Secretary General, Abdelilah Benkirane, inviting the members and leaders of the party to refrain from any comment on the subject, until the holding of the meeting of the party’s secretariat.
The General Secretariat of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) recently issued a statement on Morocco’s relations with Israel, in connection with the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories. Considering this statement as containing irresponsible excesses and dangerous approximations, the Royal Palace, through its Cabinet, in a communiqué published on Monday, stressed that Morocco’s position on the Palestinian issue is irreversible and constitutes one of the priorities of His Majesty The King’s foreign policy.
This constant principle position of Morocco cannot be subject to political grandstanding and narrow electoral campaigns, the Royal Cabinet specified in its note, recalling that in accordance with the Constitution, the foreign policy of the Kingdom is a prerogative of His Majesty The King and that the international relations of the Kingdom cannot be the subject of blackmail by anyone and for any consideration whatsoever. The instrumentalization of the Kingdom’s foreign policy in an internal partisan agenda thus constitutes a dangerous and unacceptable precedent, it is also indicated.
The Royal Cabinet further specifies that the resumption of relations between Morocco and Israel was carried out under circumstances and in a context that everyone knows, stressing that this normalization of relations, which took place in 2020, was framed by official communiqués and declarations. The driving forces of the nation, political parties and certain leading figures, as well as certain associative bodies working for the Palestinian cause, had then been informed of this decision, for which they had expressed their adherence and commitment.
