Moroccan Inmates Escape Spanish Prison on Jet Ski After Release Permit

Three Moroccans detained at the Melilla prison, and holders of a release permit, escaped to return to Morocco on board a jet ski. Previously, they had withdrawn the money they had earned by working in prison.
The inmates left the Melilla prison on September 13 after obtaining a three-day permit, and actually returned there on September 16 before organizing their escape, according to sources from the penitentiary institution to EFE.

The ACAIP-UGT prison union suspects that the escape was planned and paid for with the money earned in prison by the inmates. "It is striking that the escape took place by jet ski," the union notes in a statement, adding that "the three inmates withdrew all the money they had saved during their prison stay, on the day of their escape".
The union also denounces the granting of release permits to inmates under a deportation order attached to their sentences, as the persons concerned risk not returning to prison once the permit has been issued. It also calls for the "immediate" dismissal of the prison director and the opening of an investigation to determine responsibilities.
