Moroccan Households Struggle as Basic Food Prices Soar Amid Scrutiny of Trader Profits

Rice, tea, cooking oil, milk, coffee and durum wheat bread... the list of products whose prices are rising is very long. A situation that would be attributable to the evolution of world prices according to the specialists. However, voices are being raised to denounce the profit margins of traders who are taking advantage of the situation to drive up prices.
Moroccan households continue to face an explosion in the prices of basic necessities. This is revealed by Les Inspirations ÉCO, noting that prices have soared even further in recent months.
A situation that could accentuate social unrest, estimates the daily newspaper in a context marked by the effects of the health crisis and the expectation of the formation of the next government.
Denouncing the bad faith of some traders, the consumer federations mention the timing of the application of the law of supply and demand, pointing to "the importance of the profit margins of the latter, with probable collusions, detrimental to fair competition."
At the same time, notes the newspaper, this bidding is accompanied by poor quality of products as well as a decrease in their weight, which denotes the dishonesty that characterizes the commercial practices adopted, especially for the typology of tea and coffee products. Indeed, it argues that the coffee market in Morocco lacks control and requires the adoption of standards.
