Moroccan Health Expert Warns of COVID Resurgence Risk Despite Easing Restrictions

The easing of restrictions does not mean that the virus has disappeared. It continues to spread, exposing Morocco, if it is not careful, to an epidemiological relapse, warned Tayeb Hamdi, physician and researcher in health policies and systems.

Morocco is not immune to an epidemiological relapse despite the good performance recorded in the vaccination campaign and the decrease in serious cases, says Dr. Tayeb Hamdi, who points out that the taking of easing measures is not synonymous with the disappearance of variants.

To avoid the resurgence of the epidemic, it is necessary to continue to respect the preventive measures in order to break the chains of virus propagation, advises the physician-researcher, also inviting to vaccinate all the target groups in order to reduce serious cases and deaths.

According to a study published by a team of researchers from the University of Oxford, the lifting of travel restrictions and the entry of new imported cases into a given region could relaunch the epidemic again even if the vaccination rate of the population exceeds 60%.

Three main reasons can explain this situation. The possibility of virus transmission even after vaccination, the presence of an unvaccinated population and the emergence of strains more capable of spreading, it is noted. This is easily explained since the vaccine does not protect 100% against infection by the virus or the possibility of its transmission, despite its effectiveness in preventing disease and complete prevention of dangerous cases and reducing the risk of infection, explained Dr. Hamdi.

The researchers did, however, emphasize the importance of vaccination, stressing the need to vaccinate the remaining professionals in sectors that are in close contact with citizens, such as merchants, tourists, transporters, regardless of their age, pending that all targeted persons are vaccinated to ensure a protective collective immunity for the individual and the community. In order for Morocco and Moroccans to enjoy a safe summer, it is the responsibility of everyone to respect simple, free and effective measures to prevent coronavirus, he concluded.
