Moroccan Grandparents Fight for Custody of Grandson After Daughter’s Murder in Spain

It has already been seven months since the parents of Imane Saadaoui, the young Moroccan woman killed by her husband in Valencia, have been waiting to obtain custody of their grandson, placed in a minor center after the death of his mother in November.
Imane’s parents are waiting for a document that must be issued by the Moroccan authorities and transmitted to the Spanish authorities to obtain custody of their grandson. Since their arrival in Spain in December, a month after the death of their daughter, they have been visiting the boy twice a week in the minor center. But they hope to be able to return to Morocco with him.
According to their lawyer, they are required to provide a report on the family’s social situation, a document that must be issued in Morocco. They have been requesting it for months, but the document is slow to be issued, forcing the parents to request an extension of their visa, initially for six months. They don’t know how long they will have to wait to obtain custody of their grandson and return to Morocco.
Imane’s parents are desperate and don’t know which way to turn. Meanwhile, their daughter’s body is still being held at the morgue for the purposes of the judicial investigation that is underway. The parents will not leave Spain without their daughter’s remains and without their grandson. They have promised this to Imane’s eldest daughter, born from a previous marriage.
