Moroccan Woman Murdered by Husband in Spain; Suspect Had History of Domestic Violence

A 41-year-old Moroccan man killed his wife, Imane Saadaoui, 31, on Tuesday in Cáceres (Valencia). The murderer, who had a history of domestic violence against the victim, called the Civil Guard to confess his crime.

The Moroccan couple with their 14-month-old baby had been living in Cáceres, in the Valencia region, for two years before the tragic incident that occurred on Tuesday. The man fatally assaulted his wife before contacting the Civil Guard to confess his crime. Upon arrival, the agents found the victim deceased, Onda Cero reported.

The 14-month-old baby was taken care of by the Extremadura Council, pending being welcomed by a member of the victim’s or the murderer’s family, both of Moroccan origin. The municipality of Valencia has decreed three days of mourning during which the flags will be flown at half-mast. A minute of silence was observed on Wednesday in memory of the victim in Mérida, Cáceres and Badajoz.

The sexist murder was condemned at the highest level by the authorities. The Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, expressed her "anger and pain" at this murder on Tuesday. Also condemning this act, the President of the Extremadura Council, Guillermo Fernández Vara, stressed on Twitter the urgency of strengthening the fight against gender-based violence. The President of the Assembly, Blanca Martín and the leaders of the political parties of Extremadura, María Guardiola, David Salazar and Irene de Miguel, also condemned the act on social networks.

This year, 13 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners in Extremadura and 36 in Spain. Since 2003, when these data began to be collected, 1,166 deaths of women victims of gender-based violence have been counted.
