Moroccan Football Icon Ahmed Faras, First African Ballon d’Or Winner, Dies at 78

Moroccan football has just lost one of its legends. Ahmed Faras, the first Moroccan to win the African Ballon d’Or, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at the age of 78.
Ahmed Faras has marked the history of Moroccan football. The announcement of his death has sparked a wave of emotion on the web. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) was the first to express its sincere condolences to the family of the illustrious deceased, as well as to the entire Moroccan football community.
Personalities from Moroccan football such as national team coach Walid Regragui, Morocco national team goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, and Jawad Ziyat, the president of Raja, have also expressed their sadness following the passing of the former captain of the Atlas Lions.
Several clubs in the Botola Pro, including Wydad, Olympique de Safi, AS FAR, KACM, and many others, have also paid tribute to the memory of the former player of Chabab Mohammédia. Similarly, African and international clubs such as Al Ahly have paid tribute to the former African Ballon d’Or winner.
