Moroccan Flood Victims Seek Shelter in Mosques as Rains Continue

The inhabitants of Fqih Bensalah and Kelaât des Sraghna are forced to take refuge in mosques after the damage caused by the recent floods in these regions of the Kingdom.
In the regions of Fqih Bensalah and Kelaât des Sraghna, the traces of the recent floods are still visible. The bridge connecting the two provinces has been literally destroyed. And the restoration of road links in this area has failed due to the persistence of the downpours pouring from the sky, continuously creating powerful torrents that overflow the beds of the wadis.
Losses of dozens of hectares of seasonal crops and the destruction of many dwellings (most of them built in adobe) have been recorded, reports the daily Al Massae. Worse, the wells have been completely submerged by the undrinkable rainwater, according to the same source.
As a result, there is a rush of the population to the mosques which become their temporary refuge. Faced with the situation, the inhabitants have called on the competent authorities for help. To somewhat relieve the victims, the authorities of the province of Kelaât des Sraghna have distributed emergency food aid to the families taking refuge in the mosques.
For now, the local populations are striving to build makeshift footbridges (with precarious means) to connect the douars to each other and at least restore pedestrian traffic.
