Moroccan Feminists Push for Gender Parity in 2021 Elections

Wednesday 9 September 2020, by Jérôme

A few months before the elections, the "mounassafa daba" (parity now) coalition is active in strengthening the presence of women in Morocco’s elected bodies. The organization calls for the establishment of a framework law on equality and parity as well as the harmonization of various regulations with this principle.

For the advent of a new order, the movement has met within a few days the head of government as well as several party leaders, while other meetings with political leaders are announced. Concretely, the organization calls for the establishment of a framework law on equality and parity as well as the harmonization of various regulations with this principle.

During the meeting, which was attended by representatives of the women’s organizations of the political parties, Mr. Laftit affirmed that this meeting is part of the preparations for the next electoral deadlines of the year 2021, an electoral year par excellence, while emphasizing the great priority given by King Mohammed VI to this issue.

In statements to the press following this meeting, the representatives of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) and the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) had stressed the need to strengthen the political representation of women to achieve parity, and thus realize one of the principles of the Constitution.
