Morocco's Interior Minister Confirms 2021 Elections Will Proceed as Scheduled

The elections scheduled in Morocco next year will not be postponed. This is the promise made by the Minister of the Interior, who chaired a meeting with the heads of political parties.

As part of the organization of the elections scheduled for 2021, Abdelouafi Laftit indicates that the elections will indeed take place as planned. A statement to dispel the rumors circulating about the probability of a postponement due to the epidemiological situation. Abdelouafi Laftit also announced an increase in the financial aid granted to political parties and the guarantee of political pluralism in the public media. This aid will be granted on the basis of new criteria, he specified.

The Interior Department is already working to prepare the bills to be presented to Parliament during the next legislative session scheduled for October 2. The opposition parties are demanding the creation of a body that will be responsible for the coordination, monitoring and support of the elections. This body must be made up of representatives of political parties, trade unions represented in Parliament, government representatives and the judiciary. However, the issue of broadening the vote opposes the parties. At the end of the last round of consultations, the minister will draw up a draft containing the proposed amendments to the electoral laws, the voting system and the law on political parties. A project that will be presented to the parties to study and make observations before reaching a consensus on the final version. This version will have to be approved by the Council of Government and Parliament.

For the record, these texts must be validated before May of next year, for the organization of professional elections in June as well as the municipal and legislative elections in September, reports the daily Al Akhbar.
