Moroccan Father’s Desperate Plea to King as Son Fights for Life in China
Khalil Jaâfari is asking for the intervention of King Mohammed VI to save his son Mohamed Ali, a Moroccan student who is between life and death after a serious accident in Chengdu, China. The father denounces the inaction of the Moroccan embassy in Beijing, which refuses to provide him with an interpreter to communicate with the hospital.
For more than two weeks, Mohamed Ali Jaâfari has been between life and death in a hospital in Chengdu, China. His father, Khalil Jaâfari, residing in Morocco, has gone to his bedside, but is faced with the language barrier and what he considers a "serious negligence" on the part of the Moroccan embassy in Beijing. "I do not want, for the moment, to speak ill of the embassy, but the family and friends have noted that it has not fulfilled its duty as it should," he confides in a statement to Al3omk. The father says he simply asked for an interpreter to communicate with the police and the hospital, but the embassy provided him with the number of a person who only speaks English and Chinese, two languages he does not master.
Khalil Jaâfari is desperate. "I am psychologically destroyed. Sixteen days that I do not eat and do not sleep. I just wanted to find someone by my side here," he laments. The father had to manage to complete the formalities with the hospital, the university and the insurance company. Meanwhile, the condition of his son has deteriorated. The hospital is demanding more than 200,000 yuan (about 270,000 dirhams) to cover the costs of the first surgical operation undergone by Mohamed. Faced with this situation, Khalil Jaâfari makes a direct appeal to the king. "I call on His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God preserve him, to intervene to save the life of my only son. I ask for nothing more than urgent medical assistance so as not to lose him."
A young Palestinian residing in Chengdu, who introduces himself as Hamouda, has confirmed the father’s version in a video posted on social media. "I am a Palestinian from Gaza and I live here in Chengdu. I have been by the side of the Moroccan student Mohamed Ali’s father from the beginning, who had a serious accident. His whole body is broken, he has problems with his heart, lungs and spine, and his life is in danger," he explains. According to him, the university and the insurance company "are trying to evade their responsibilities," while the Chinese police have officially requested the intervention of the Moroccan embassy, without success.
And to protest: "The police themselves said today that the embassy should intervene, but unfortunately, when I contacted the Moroccan embassy, they told me verbatim that it was not their problem. He is a son of Morocco, a son of the red flag. How can we abandon him in this way?" The young Palestinian, touched by the father’s fight for his son, adds: "I am Palestinian, but my heart has broken for this unhappy man. Imagine if it were your father or uncle in such a situation, isolated abroad without anyone to speak Arabic. I call on every free person to have compassion for this father who is living a real tragedy here in China."
The video has sparked a wave of reactions from Moroccan Internet users who have called for urgent intervention by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Moroccan embassy in Beijing to assist Mohamed Ali, who is in critical condition. His prognosis could be at stake. His father hopes that his call to the king will be heard before it is too late.
