In Lille, Moroccan supporters celebrated the feat of the round of 16 achieved by the Atlas Lions who eliminated Spain on penalties (0-0, 3-0 p.k.) to qualify for their first World Cup quarter-final. A few incidents were recorded.
Cries of joy, fireworks... At Porte des Postes, several hundred Moroccan supporters took to the streets to celebrate Morocco’s historic victory over Spain. "It’s incredible! Historic what we’re experiencing. It’s crazy...", jubilates Ahmad with La Voix du Nord. "Soon France, France-Morocco we’ll tickle them!" Closer to the city center, fans also celebrated the qualification of the Atlas Lions for the quarter-finals around the Grand-Place.
The celebration almost degenerated. Some individuals fired mortars at the police, who were present in large numbers. They also greeted the CRS with whistles. The police officers had to intervene. "These are not real Moroccans, we celebrate with dignity," say Imane and Dounia. "What they’re doing is not good, no amalgamation..."
