Morocco Stuns Spain in World Cup Upset, Fans Flood Champs-Élysées

Many Moroccan supporters stormed the Champs-Élysées on Tuesday evening to celebrate Morocco’s historic qualification for the World Cup quarter-finals 2022 in Qatar. The Atlas Lions resisted Spain before eliminating them on penalties (3 p.k. to 0, 0-0 a.e.t.).
The cold did not prevent the Moroccan supporters from coming out in large numbers and gathering on the Champs-Élysées, the usual gathering place for supporters of the French national team, to celebrate Morocco’s historic victory over Spain.
"It’s an indescribable joy, we came as a family with wife and child, it’s an incredible achievement, Spain is not a small team," exulted Mohammed Rhezrani, 55, a teacher. "It’s a national holiday for us." Nawel Mchich, an 18-year-old student, says she is proud of her country, Morocco. "We believe in the final, the path is beautiful and long. We have already beaten very good teams," she is convinced.
