Moroccan Expats Allege Customs Misconduct at Tanger Med Port

The Directorate General of Customs of Morocco has received a complaint from a group of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) denouncing the inappropriate treatment of a supervisor and an agent at the port of Tanger Med.
"When we entered the country on Friday evening, while we were following the customs procedures for our vehicle, including the scanner control, the supervisor approached us to ask us what we were transporting. We informed him of what we had (two refrigerators, a washing machine and a used television)," they detail in the complaint relayed by El Faro de Ceuta.
The MREs recount having spent more than three hours waiting for the clearance of the two agents to continue on their way. "Each time we asked what was happening, we did not get an answer," they explain, blaming the supervisor and the agent for having "spoken to them without any respect or consideration".
Meanwhile, other "utility vehicles loaded with new clothes and shoes, registered in the city of Ceuta, were passing through, without following customs procedures, declarations or anything else," the complainants also denounce, specifying that the customs officer "hurried to receive and facilitate the departure" of these vehicles. According to them, this is a flagrant violation of the rules by the two agents.
The MREs say they have also suffered "abuse and threats". For all these reasons, they are asking for the "urgent" intervention of the Director General of Customs "to put an end to these illegal actions and to verify the veracity of their statements by viewing the surveillance cameras at the border posts". They also request the opening of an investigation into the vehicles from Ceuta entering Morocco without undergoing customs checks.
