Moroccan PM Declines Traditional Russian Welcome at Africa Summit

The Head of Government, Saâdedine El Othmani, declined the invitation to taste Russian bread and salt during the welcoming ceremony for African guests present in Sochi to attend the Russia-Africa Summit.
Despite the explanations of a Russian official, El Othmani persisted in refusing this dish which embodies compassion and is a protocol of use in the Russian tradition of hospitality.
By agreeing to eat the offered piece of bread after dipping it in salt, the guest adheres to the principle of a lasting friendship with his host.
In Russia, bread and salt are linked to the notion of hospitality. Bread represents the sustenance of life and mercy, while salt is a symbol of loyalty and honor.
