Moroccan Consumers Outraged by Soaring Restaurant Prices During Summer Season

Photos of high consumer bills from cafes and restaurants have been circulating on Moroccan social networks lately, sparking a lively debate on the exorbitant prices charged by these establishments during the summer season.

Opinions are divided on the subject. Some believe that the authors of these photos have consumed in luxury restaurants, which justifies these hefty bills. According to them, the people concerned should not come to complain on social networks, because "the prices are set in the menu" of these establishments and they were not obliged to order.

Others, on the other hand, support that many restaurant and hotel owners take advantage of the summer season, when many Moroccans living abroad and foreign tourists flock to the kingdom, to raise prices. "Prices are free, and what is mandatory is their display," explains Bouazza Kharrati, president of the Moroccan Union of Consumer Rights.

"The consumer must check the price list and, if he sees that they do not correspond to his purchasing power, he must go elsewhere, thus exercising his right of choice, which will force the merchant to modify his prices to attract customers," Kharrati added.

The debate on the increase in prices of restaurants and hotels during the summer season comes back every year. Restaurants that do not indicate the prices on the menus face strong criticism from Internet users who accuse them of taking advantage of the ignorance of consumers by imposing prices after consumption.
