Moroccan Coach Makes History: Halilhodzic Qualifies Fourth Team for World Cup

By qualifying Morocco for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Vahid Halilhodzic makes history. He becomes the first coach in the world to participate in four consecutive World Cup editions with four different national teams.
Vahid Halilhodzic is an exceptional coach in the sense that he is the first to have qualified four different countries for a World Cup. The qualification of Morocco for the Qatar 2022 World Cup earns him this recognition. The Atlas Lions drew 1-1 in the first leg against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Kinshasa, and crushed their opponent in the return leg in Casablanca with a convincing score of 4-1.

Before Morocco, Vahid had managed to qualify Côte d’Ivoire for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa in May 2008, after a flawless run. He led the Ivorian team to the quarter-finals, which cost him his job. This is how he found himself in Algeria in July 2011. After a few difficult years, he finally qualified the Algerian team for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. For the first time, Algeria reached the round of 16 of a World Cup.
The Franco-Bosnian then signed a contract with the Japanese national team with the goal of qualifying them for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. An objective he achieved on August 31, 2017 by giving the victory to the Japanese in their match against Australia (2-0).
