Moroccan TV Channel 2M Shifts to Paid Subscription Model Amid Financial Crisis

Free for many years, the second national television channel 2M is looking for new ways to replenish its coffers. It has just joined the pay-to-view "Maghreb" group on Freebox TV from Free.
Plunged into an unprecedented financial crisis, the television channel 2M is now accessible to the Moroccan community abroad through the Maghreb package, the subscription to which is 4.99 euros per month.
A unilateral decision imposed without notice to viewers, the latter, surprised by the message that appeared on their boxes, have difficulty explaining the reason, especially since the channel benefits from taxes paid by Moroccans.
To recall, the second channel had been deprived of the right to broadcast on the Egyptian satellite Nilesat, due to non-payment of royalties. With an estimated deficit of 750 million dirhams, the channel is struggling to ensure the salaries of its staff, let alone the sustainability of its regional offices.
