Moroccan Cafe Owners Protest Tax Assessments Amid Pandemic Recovery

Cafe owners no longer hide their anger. The latest tax assessment, sent by the Directorate General of Taxes, was very poorly received by the profession.
After several months of inactivity, and a rather timid recovery, cafe owners must face the tax authorities who, according to the daily Assabah, have not taken into account the difficult situation related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The professional tax (license), the calculation of which is linked to the rental value and not to the turnover, was maintained at the same rate during the 2020 fiscal year, continues the daily. However, the rigidity shown by the DGI during this crisis period is likely to have disastrous repercussions on the sector, or even lead to the permanent closure of several establishments.
Alluding to tourism professionals whose employees will benefit from a Covid-19 fund allowance of 2,000 dirhams, cafe owners have called on the authorities to grant them incentive measures to help them overcome the crisis, the newspaper points out.
