Moroccan Blogger Faces Backlash Over Racist Joke About Newborn Niece
Wednesday 27 November 2019, by
Blogger Sara Abujad posted a video on YouTube on Friday, November 22 that quickly provoked the wrath of Internet users. The racist nature of this video, in which she makes a tasteless joke about the skin color of her newborn niece, is the cause.
A buzz that will have flopped. In this video, she describes "the greatest fear of her life" at the birth of her niece, Nevine. She wanted to make a joke to her brother-in-law who was absent during his wife’s delivery, reports TelQuel. She presents him with a baby with black skin wrapped in a pink blanket and asks him: "Who does the little one look like?"
In response, the blogger’s brother-in-law launches the hashtag "#عنصرية_سارة_ابوجاد" (the racism of Sara Abujad) to denounce the video. What happens next? Internet users go wild on the web. Many Facebook groups have accused her of racism.
On Monday, November 25, she posts a new video in which she tries to redeem herself. "I am against racism and injustice. (...) I am accused of racism when I have faced several situations where non-Moroccans have been victims of racism and it is I who have intervened," said Sara Abujad. She also assured that she had deleted the part of the video that was the source of the controversy.
