Moroccan Belgians: BM111 Document Required for Morocco Healthcare Coverage
Moroccans in Belgium who travel to Morocco can benefit from coverage of certain medical care during their stay. However, this protection is not automatic: it requires specific conditions, a specific document, and does not cover trips organized solely for medical treatment.

Traveling to Morocco for vacation, visiting family, or spending a few weeks in your home country does not mean losing all Belgian medical protection. Belgium and Morocco are linked by a bilateral convention that provides coverage for certain healthcare services during a temporary stay.

However, this protection has limits. It covers care that becomes immediately necessary during the stay. In other words, it concerns unforeseen situations: illness, accident, medical emergency, or care that cannot wait until returning to Belgium.
INAMI reminds those insured under Belgian legislation that they can, under certain conditions, access healthcare in Morocco thanks to the BM111 document. This form is issued by the Belgian mutual insurance fund before departure. It entitles you to immediately necessary care during your stay.
This document is therefore essential for Moroccans in Belgium traveling to Morocco, especially during summer vacations. Without it, procedures can become more complicated, and advance payment of fees may be necessary.
The BM111 form changes everything
The BM111 is not just a simple administrative document. It serves to prove that the person is covered by Belgian legislation and can benefit from the Belgium-Morocco convention for urgent or necessary care during the stay.
Its duration is limited. The document is valid for only three months. It must therefore correspond to the period of stay in Morocco. A long departure, extended return, or settlement in Morocco does not automatically fall under the same framework.
Another important limitation: the BM111 does not cover a trip organized solely for the purpose of receiving medical treatment in Morocco. An insured person who voluntarily travels for surgery, treatment, or scheduled care cannot use this procedure as if it were an emergency occurring during vacation.
For scheduled care abroad, the rules are different. In countries linked to Belgium by a bilateral convention, such care is not reimbursed by the convention itself. Prior approval from the medical advisor may be necessary if the insured wishes to request coverage under Belgian legislation.
In case of care in Morocco, the BM111 must be presented to the healthcare provider or competent organization on site. Reimbursement is made according to the rates in effect in Morocco at the time of care. Therefore, you should not automatically expect the same level of reimbursement as in Belgium.
If the person does not have the BM111 during their stay, two solutions exist. They can contact their mutual insurance fund to try to obtain it, or pay medical fees on site and then submit invoices to their mutual fund after returning to Belgium.
For MREs, the precaution is simple: request the document before departure, verify its validity period, and keep all medical receipts in case of care in Morocco. Invoices, prescriptions, certificates, and proof of payment may be necessary to obtain reimbursement.
The Belgium-Morocco convention therefore provides real protection, but it does not transform care in Morocco into automatic coverage. It mainly covers medical emergencies during a temporary stay, not planned care or extended departures without formalities.
Before hitting the road or taking a plane to Morocco, Moroccans in Belgium should contact their mutual insurance fund. A simple oversight can complicate reimbursement. Care remains possible, but you must leave with the right document.
