Belgian Pension Morocco: Keep Your Benefits After Moving

Moroccans who have worked in Belgium can, under certain conditions, continue to receive their Belgian pension after moving to Morocco. The social security agreement between the two countries prevents a return home from erasing acquired rights.

For many Moroccans in Belgium, retirement is also being prepared in Morocco. After a career spent in Belgium, some choose to return permanently to their country, spend a large part of the year there, or rejoin their family. This departure does not necessarily mean the loss of the Belgian pension.

Belgium and Morocco are linked by a bilateral social security agreement. This text organizes coordination between the two countries and notably covers retirement pensions and survivor pensions. It allows, under certain conditions, to receive benefits from one country while residing in the other.

The principle is important for MREs. A person who has worked in Belgium and acquired pension rights does not automatically lose them because they settle in Morocco. Work periods completed in Belgium remain taken into account, and the Belgian pension can continue to be paid according to the beneficiary’s situation.

The agreement also makes it possible to take into account periods of activity completed in both countries to open the right to certain benefits and calculate their amount. This may concern people who have had a career split between Belgium and Morocco.

A move to Morocco must be prepared

For Moroccans already living in Morocco and approaching retirement age, the application is not always made directly in Belgium. The SPF Foreign Affairs clarifies that when a social security agreement dealing with pensions exists with the country of residence, the application must be submitted on site to the local body competent in social security matters.

This does not mean that Belgium disappears from the file. The Federal Pensions Service remains the body that manages, in particular, the payment of Belgian pensions for employees, civil servants and self-employed persons. But the procedure may go through the institutions of the country of residence when the agreement provides for it.

Retirees must also pay attention to practical formalities. A pension paid abroad requires a correct address, up-to-date banking details and, in some cases, documents to be returned. The certificate of life is one of the most sensitive points: the pensioner residing abroad may receive a form each year to be completed and returned quickly to avoid interruption of payments.

The move to Morocco must therefore be reported correctly. A change of address, a change of bank account or failure to respond to an administrative request can lead to delays or temporary suspension of payment. For retirees, the risk often comes less from the right to the pension than from forgotten procedures.

Family situation must also be monitored. In the event of the pensioner’s death, survivor’s pension is not automatically granted to the surviving spouse. They must apply for it. In families settled between Belgium and Morocco, this formality can easily be overlooked.

Finally, it is necessary to distinguish retirement pension from other social benefits. A pension acquired through a professional career does not follow the same rules as an assistance allowance or a benefit linked to residence in Belgium. Not all sums paid to elderly people are therefore exportable in the same way.

For Moroccans in Belgium, the message is clear: moving to live in Morocco does not necessarily mean giving up your Belgian pension. But the departure must be anticipated, the procedures must be carried out with the right bodies and the requested documents must be returned within the deadlines.

The pension can follow the retiree to Morocco. But it does not automatically follow a poorly prepared file. Before leaving Belgium or applying for your pension from Morocco, it is better to check your rights, your professional history, your country of residence, your banking details and the administrative obligations related to payment abroad.
