Moroccan Authorities Foil Smuggling of 720 Protected Goldfinches in Produce Truck

An attempt to traffic 720 goldfinches was thwarted on Wednesday in the province of Fqih Ben Saleh. They were hidden in crate trays on board a truck transporting fruits and vegetables.
The operation was carried out by a special brigade composed of the head of the Béni Mellal Forest Resources Conservation and Development Center and the Head of the Wildlife Surveillance and Control Unit, in collaboration with the competent judicial authorities and the Béni Mellal prefectural police.
It made it possible to seize these rare species as part of the fight against poaching and the illegal trade in wild flora and fauna species in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 29-05 on the protection of wild flora and fauna species and the control of their trade.
The goldfinches seized by the brigade were released into the wild. The suspects, for their part, were subjected to the investigation procedures according to the laws in force. As for the intercepted truck, it was impounded.
