Moroccan MP Assaulted: Political Parties Condemn Pre-Election Violence in Fès

A member of parliament from the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) and the party’s regional coordinator in the city of Oulad Tayyeb were assaulted in the Fès region during this pre-election period. An assault condemned by the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS), the Istiqlal Party (PI), the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) and the Popular Movement (MP).

It is "a corrupt political party whose behavior is based on intimidation (baltaja) and violence against its political rivals that is behind this odious attack... A party that considers Oulad Tayyeb as its electoral and political stronghold," reacted the four political parties in a statement. A violent dispute broke out in a cafe in the city involving an authority agent, they report.

These parties expressed their concerns following the "verbal and physical violence" against the two PAM members. According to them, this violence will in no way dampen the determination of the activists to "continue their action and commitment in the service of the inhabitants of the city, and to fight against corruption and the corrupt."

To prevent this violence, the signatories of the statement call on the local authorities to "ensure the freedom of noble political practice" and to remain "at the same distance from all political sensibilities." The presence of an authority agent constitutes a "negative fact that deeply affects the principle of neutrality to which the wali has committed himself during the first meeting of the regional commission responsible for monitoring the elections," they believe. They also call for legal action to be taken against any other person involved in these attacks.
