The Moroccan art scene in mourning after the death of Safia Ziani

The dean of Moroccan actresses succumbed on January 31 to a long-standing pathology that had kept her away from the sets and bedridden at her home. Admitted to the emergency room following a deterioration of her general condition, Safia Ziani leaves behind the image of an authentic artist who had marked the beginnings of national theater and cinema.

From the first generation of actors in the Kingdom, she had distinguished herself by a natural interpretation that had ensured her a long popularity. Despite this rich cultural heritage, her last years were darkened by media isolation and precarious social conditions, a consequence of a forced withdrawal from public life.

Morocco thus loses a founding figure whose passion had helped lay the foundations of Moroccan dramatic art at a time of limited means.
