Moroccan and Algerian Foreign Ministers Address Diplomatic Incident in Phone Call

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita exchanged with his Algerian counterpart, Sabri Boukadoum, on Friday, May 15, on bilateral relations between the two countries. The two heads of diplomacy notably discussed the diplomatic incident in Oran.

During the telephone conversation, the two ministers agreed that "this kind of affair is not settled on social networks, but between duly mandated officials to do so," reports Le 360.

It all started with the meeting between the diplomat and a group of Moroccans blocked in Algeria to listen to their grievances. In a video that went viral on social networks, the Moroccan diplomat was attributed undesirable remarks, describing Algeria as the "enemy country" of Morocco. In the wake of this, Hassan Abdelkhalek, Morocco’s ambassador to Algiers, was summoned last Thursday to the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the same media, which cites an authorized source at the Moroccan embassy in Algiers, the video was tampered with to make the Moroccan consul general in Oran utter remarks that he had not uttered at any time. This incriminated video would be quite different from the one transmitted on Monday, May 11 to Morocco, it is affirmed.

In addition, a thorough investigation has been initiated to elucidate the ins and outs of this affair.
