Moroccan Actress Najat El Ouafi Acquitted in High-Profile Adultery Case

Actress Najat El Ouafi and director Saïd Khallaf were cleared of all suspicion by the court of first instance in Casablanca. As early as September 2019, the actress had been acquitted of the charge of adultery brought against her by her husband.

It was in 2019 that Najat El Ouafi’s husband filed a complaint accusing the director and the actress of incitement to debauchery and adultery. The police proceeded to arrest them, in an apartment in Casablanca. In response to this complaint, Najat El Ouafi in turn reacted by filing a complaint against her husband, whom she accuses of defamation, said Tayeb Alami El Edlouni, the actress’s lawyer.

After several months of trial, it was finally on March 15 that the two defendants were acquitted by the justice system. The court did not find the arguments put forward convincing and accusing the two friends of the acts with which they are charged. Proof, Najat El Ouafi was acquitted for the first count of indictment in September 2019. The actress and the director spent one night alone in an apartment in Gauthier under the surveillance of four police officers following the complaint filed by the husband. Another team took over late at night and it was this one that tried to apprehend the two accused around 7 a.m. But on site, there was no evidence confirming the thesis of adultery.

During the trial for adultery, the two accused were confronted with messages extracted from their phones on which an expertise was carried out. In total, there would be at least 300 messages exchanged between the two alleged lovers, some of which include explicit expressions. The actress and the director had told the investigators that they only have a professional relationship, in order to prepare a film where the actress was also to be the director’s assistant.

After a trial that lasted three months, the prosecution finally decided to acquit Najat El Ouafi, rejecting the main charge against her, namely that she had been guilty of adultery. With the verdict of last Monday concerning the second count of indictment, it is the end of a case that will have lasted almost two years.
