Moroccan Activists Launch Boycott Against Fuel Companies as Prices Soar

Faced with the continuous rise in the prices of gasoline and diesel in Morocco, activists intend to organize a new campaign to boycott the petroleum products sold by several companies, including Afriquia of the Aziz Akhannouch group.
Even if the high cost of petroleum products is a direct consequence of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the companies present are in the sights of Moroccans who blame them for the lack of an accompanying policy to relieve them. Thus, calls for a boycott of several of these companies, including Afriquia which belongs to the group of Aziz Akhannouch, head of government, have been launched.
Since Wednesday, the price of diesel has reached almost 16 dirhams per liter, while gasoline is now sold at 18 DH/L. These prices will unfortunately continue to soar, especially gasoline which could reach 20DH/L, according to some professionals in the sector.
A few days ago, some opposition deputies called during the oral question session for the government to subsidize petroleum products. But Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Minister of Finance, stated that the executive no longer has the means to subsidize fuel again. She stressed that other sectors are facing the same difficulties and are awaiting urgent measures from the government.
