Moroccan Activists Demand Justice for Rape and Murder Victim in Rabat Protest

The Democratic Association of Moroccan Women (ADFM) is calling for justice to be done in the case of the murder of Hanane, a woman who was raped and tortured, in the Mellah neighborhood of Rabat.

Activists, women and men, members of associations, actors, ordinary citizens, gathered on Friday, July 19, 2019, in front of the headquarters of the Parliament in Rabat. They protested against violence against women and also demanded that justice be done for Hanane.

The organization of the sit-in came the day after the arrest of eight people for their alleged involvement in criminal acts related, in particular, to the non-reporting of the crime and the failure to assist a person in danger.

Following the dissemination on social networks of a video showing the physical assault, the police conducted its investigations, which led to the arrest of the persons involved, people aged between 33 and 61 years old. The person involved in the filming of this video was also identified but is in detention in the context of another case.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 18, the Democratic Association of Moroccan Women had denounced the inaction of the country’s institutions around the murder of Hanane for more than a month.

The ADFM also demands that the perpetrator of the crime and his accomplices be sentenced to heavy sentences.

Furthermore, the Association calls, among other things, for the implementation of real public policies aimed at combating violence against women.
