Molenbeek: Camilia, 14 years old, beaten and burned in the face by eight individuals
Three weeks after an ambush of unheard-of violence, Camilia remains deeply traumatized. Harassed for months, she was beaten and burned by a group of eight young people, under the helpless gaze of her mother who denounces the inaction of the institutions.
The ordeal of Camilia, 14 years old, turned into an absolute tragedy on January 20th in Molenbeek. Trapped on her way out of her new school, the young girl was surrounded by eight individuals who beat her up before burning her face with a lighter. In her blurred memories following a loss of consciousness, her tormentors were also handling a can of gasoline. "My daughter narrowly escaped an attempted murder, nothing less," her mother Laïla indignantly says, revealing that the teenager tried to commit suicide due to the trauma, reports La Dernière Heure.
This outburst of violence is the culmination of a long campaign of harassment initiated, according to the family, after Camilia refused to give in to the advances of a classmate. Insults on WhatsApp, spitting and shoving had become her daily life. Laïla points the finger at the responsibility of the management of the former school, accused of having minimized the facts during a first assault in December and of having described the victim as "stubborn" when she refused mediation with her tormentors.
Despite a change of school to protect her, Camilia was found by her aggressors as early as the second day. Today, while three suspects have been identified but left free, the victim lives in seclusion and only partially attends school, terrorized. "I sincerely hope that these young people will be neutralized," her mother concludes, as the investigation is stalling.
