Murder of Khadouj Ouad: stabbed in front of her helpless mother
The trial of Allal Zannahi, accused of murdering his wife Khadouj Ouad in 2022 in Antwerp, sheds light on a family tragedy marked by violence and silence. Before the Assize Court, the testimonies of the victim’s and the accused’s relatives have painted a portrait of a couple broken by a past drama and financial tensions, leading to a fatal outcome that the victim dreaded.
Khadouj Ouad, described as a "joyful" woman devoted to her children, had been married to Allal at the age of 18. While the early years seemed happy, the relationship deteriorated after a domestic fire in 1998, during which one of their daughters died and another was severely burned. Allal held his wife responsible for this tragedy, an accusation described as "absurd" by the victim’s brother, who recalls that she was "devastated" by it.
"If I stay, he will kill me too"
The situation worsened in 2002 after a second fire. This time insured, the spouses argued over the compensation, with Khadouj having given part of it to her family. As early as 2007, the victim’s sister noted injuries and collected chilling confidences. "Khadouj said he would kill her [if she divorced], but that if she stayed, he would kill her too," she testified at the bar.
On September 7, 2022, the threat materialized. Khadouj was stabbed to death in the street, in front of her wheelchair-bound mother, helpless. Fatima, another sister living across from the crime scene, recounted the horror of the scene: "I saw Khadouj lying on the ground, the blood was flowing from her." The accused’s family, on the other hand, describes a "calm" and "reserved" man, claiming to have never suspected such violence.
