Mohamed Katir Shatters Two Spanish Distance Running Records in One Week

After breaking the Spanish record in the 1500 meters on Friday, the Spanish athlete of Moroccan origin, Mohamed Katir, has held the new Spanish record in the 3,000 meters since Tuesday with a score of 7:27.64. He thus dethroned Isaac Viciosa (7:29.34), the best performance in this category since 1998.
Mohamed Katir is chaining performances. In less than a week, he has broken the Spanish records in the 1,500 meters and the 3,000 meters. On Tuesday, July 13, he finished third in the 3,000 meters, behind Australian Stewart McSweyn and Andrew Butchart. His compatriots Fernando Carro and Sergio Jiménez finished 11th and 13th respectively.

Last week, the 23-year-old athlete of Moroccan origin broke the record of Fermin Cacho (Zurich, 1997) in the 1,500 meters, with a time of 3:28.76. Since June 10, he holds the new Spanish record in the 5,000 meters, with a performance of 12:50.79. He is currently preparing for the Tokyo Olympics where he intends to break a new record in the 5km.

Mohamed Katir thus becomes the fifth athlete in the history of Spanish athletics to hold the three records in the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters, after Pere Prat, Juan Muguerza, Joaquim Miquel and José Luis González, said the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation.
