Missing in Morocco for Three Months, Dutch Police Say Ouadoud May Be in the Netherlands

Missing in Tangier since last July, 22-year-old Abdel Ouadoud Rabbaj remains unaccounted for. After nearly three months of searching in Morocco, Dutch police are now considering another possibility: the young man may be in the Netherlands, particularly in the Utrecht region.

What if Ouadoud Rabbaj is no longer in Morocco? Since he went missing in Tangier in July, his family has searched extensively but has been unable to find him. But on Monday, October 12, Dutch police issued a new appeal for information, publicly raising for the first time the possibility that he had returned to the Netherlands. Investigators are particularly interested in the area around Zeist, where the 22-year-old lived.

“We cannot rule out that Abdel is currently in the Netherlands,” police said in their new missing-person appeal. Authorities believe his ties to Zeist may have led him to return to the area. They are asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.

Ouadoud went missing during a family holiday in Tangier, after leaving the accommodation where he was staying with his parents. His phone was switched off, and he had taken neither his daily medication nor the supplies needed for his care.

Thousands of kilometres travelled in search of him

His disappearance prompted a large-scale search. His relatives searched the streets of Tangier, contacted hospitals and circulated photographs. In August, his family also extended the search to other Moroccan cities, fearing that Ouadoud might have been mistaken for a homeless person and taken far from Tangier.

In September, his father, Khadir Rabbaj, told Dutch broadcaster NOS that he had travelled thousands of kilometres with volunteers. One lead took him as far as Témara, several hours away by road, but the person reported did not match his son.

The concern is heightened because Ouadoud has physical after-effects from an accident and has difficulty getting around. He depends on help from his relatives and usually takes medication.
