After a $500 Million Contract, Morocco Wants to Buy More Israeli Systems

The Israeli Defense Ministry is examining a new list of equipment requested by Morocco, the specialized magazine European Security & Defence reported this Monday, September 14, citing Israeli sources.

The nature of the systems concerned, their number and the amount of the operation have not yet been specified. No new contract has so far been announced by Rabat or by Israeli defense companies.

This request would extend military cooperation already marked by the acquisition of the Barak MX from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). Concluded in 2022, this contract was valued at approximately $500 million. This amount therefore concerns the previous order and not the new equipment currently under consideration.

The Barak MX is a multilayer air defense system designed to intercept aircraft, helicopters, drones, as well as cruise or ballistic missiles. Delivered progressively starting in 2023, it is now presented as operational in Morocco.

A New List of Purchases Reviewed in Israel

Morocco also purchased the SkyLock anti-drone system in 2021, designed to detect and neutralize unauthorized aircraft around sensitive facilities. These acquisitions accompanied the military rapprochement that began after relations between Rabat and Tel Aviv were restored in December 2020.

Cooperation could now go beyond imports alone. IAI is due to participate in the Marrakech Airshow, from October 7 to 10, with the intention of establishing industrial partnerships and transferring certain technologies to Morocco. The group plans in particular to showcase missiles, drones and several air defense solutions there.
