Melilla Shaken by Two 3.6-Magnitude Earthquakes in 24 Hours

Melilla felt two earthquakes of magnitude greater than 3.5 on the Richter scale in just 24 hours (Monday and Tuesday), with an epicenter in the Moroccan town of Anoual, located 87 kilometers from the autonomous city.
The first earthquake, of magnitude 3.6 and "intensity III", occurred on Monday at 10:57 pm and was "felt" in homes, as was the second, also of magnitude 3.6, which occurred on Tuesday at 7:12 pm, according to the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN).
The two earthquakes did not cause any material damage, but sparked a wave of comments on social media, reports Europa Press. Internet users called on the citizens of Melilla to be cautious, recalling that earthquakes are frequent in the autonomous city.
Between April 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022, a total of 7,059 earthquakes were recorded in the Alboran region, 275 of which were felt by the population, according to IGN data.
Two major shocks were recorded during the period: on August 28, 2021 (magnitude 5.1) and May 20, 2022 (magnitude 5.3), and were felt in Melilla and on the coasts of Malaga, Granada and Almería.
