The disappearance of the barrier between Gibraltar and Spain is now fueling another dream, a few hundred kilometers further east. In Melilla, a political party imagines a city freed from its fence with Morocco and closely associated with the development of Nador.
The Nueva Melilla party wishes for the Spanish enclave to one day experience a transformation comparable to that of Gibraltar. It calls for replacing the logic of separation with sustainable cooperation with Morocco, reports El Faro de Melilla.

The political party even imagines the dismantling of the fence separating Melilla from its Moroccan surroundings. It dreams of a joint appearance by the president of the autonomous city and the mayor of Nador to announce investments and joint projects.
Nueva Melilla insists, however, that rapprochement with Morocco would not mean abandoning political positions or sovereignty claims. The objective would rather be to facilitate circulation, legal trade, and cooperation in several fields, including economics, tourism, culture, university, and health.
The party believes that Melilla and Nador could become two complementary poles. The Spanish city would capitalize on its position between Europe and Africa, while the Nador region would benefit from investments made around the future Nador West Med port complex.
