Melilla Leader Accuses Morocco of ’Humiliation’ Over Border Restrictions

On the occasion of Melilla Day celebrated on September 18, the president of the city, Juan José Imbroda, denounced the unilateral closure by Morocco, since August 2018, of the commercial customs office, and also stated that Morocco "humiliates" Melilla by not respecting the passenger regime at the Beni-Enzar border.
Since the reopening of the Beni-Enzar land border, Morocco does not apply reciprocity in the transit of travelers. Moroccans can enter Melilla with goods, but Morocco does not accept the traffic of goods from Melilla, to the detriment of the merchants and businessmen of the autonomous city. In doing so, Morocco "humiliates" Melilla, Imbroda denounced.
The president of Melilla also criticized the term "occupied territory" increasingly used by Morocco to designate the autonomous city, insisting on the need for the autonomous city to "resolutely turn northward with all the consequences." Imbroda called on the European Union to demand that Morocco reopen the commercial customs and respect the customs regime for travelers.
Before these criticisms, Imbroda expressed his "solidarity" and "support" to the Moroccan people for "the disaster of the earthquake."
