Melilla to Deploy Drones for Border Surveillance as Morocco Crossing Reopens

The city of Melilla intends to use drones to control its border with Morocco as soon as it reopens, announced the colonel of the Civil Guard of the city, Antonio Sierras Sánchez.
The control of the border of Melilla with Morocco will soon be ensured by drones. The authorities of the autonomous city are only waiting for the reopening of the border to implement this new measure, reports Huffpost.
In announcing the news, the colonel of the Civil Guard, Antonio Sierras Sánchez, praised the "collaboration and loyalty" of the Moroccan security forces in the fight against illegal immigration, recalling that many Moroccan agents have been injured or lost their lives in this control work. On the Spanish side, more than 60 Civil Guards were injured in 2021 while trying to repel the "rare violence assaults of migrants", he added.
Sierras also announced the upcoming installation of new long-range cameras and hopes that in the coming months "the process of using drones can begin", in order to reduce the risks taken by Civil Guard agents in this type of intervention.
In this sense, he detailed that "until now a new fiber optic has been installed along the perimeter in addition to the total change in certain sections of this and new security cameras have been replaced and installed," Sánchez said.
