Melilla Demands Payment from Moroccan Women for Past Medical Care

Moroccan families in Nador have been summoned by the authorities of the Spanish enclave, Melilla, to urgently report to the Comarcal Hospital management to pay the fees related to gynecological care.
The letter, received by the Moroccan families in Nador, by registered mail, did not detail the reason for the summons. According to a lawyer in Melilla, these concern the recovery of public debts, in particular those related to childbirth operations and gynecological care previously provided to women from Nador.
The lawyer adds that the decision has no legal basis and is fraudulent, since the Moroccan women concerned had not signed a commitment or a debt acknowledgment. Furthermore, they were not informed of the fees related to the medical services.
In addition, the Spanish Consulate in Nador has required Moroccan families to pay their public debts to the Comarcal Hospital before being able to withdraw their passport. These debts, according to the families, range from 1,000 to 3,000 euros, in addition to additional fees. For them, these amounts are too high and, above all, unjustifiable, even if they are Caesarean sections.
