Melilla Business Group Offers $70 Million to Morocco, Seeks Border Reopening

The Confederation of Melilla Enterprises (CEME) is seeking to seduce the Moroccan authorities in order to obtain from them the reopening of the borders with the enclaves. The economic situation continues to deteriorate in these times of health crisis related to the coronavirus.
To succeed in its seduction operation, the CEME has released around 70 million euros in favor of the neighboring Moroccan regions, reports Les Inspirations Éco. This fund is allocated to support the health, employment and education sectors. This will have a positive impact on the population of the Rif region. A financial envelope of 12 million euros has also been disbursed for the supply of residents of the enclave with fruits, vegetables and seafood from Nador.
According to the Association for Human Rights in Andalusia, cross-border trade generates around 1.4 billion dirhams in revenue each year and 40,000 direct and indirect jobs. In addition, Melilla imports goods worth 800,000 euros from Morocco. The importance of this trade thus leads economic operators to call on the Moroccan authorities to reopen the land borders. Remains to be seen whether their call will be heard.
