Mazraoui’s Comeback: Man United’s Secret Weapon for Liverpool Clash

Due to an injury, Noussair Mazraoui has not played since the 2-1 victory against Chelsea last September. Despite this injury, the 27-year-old player was called up by Walid Regragui, the coach of the Moroccan national team, for the two matches against Congo and Bahrain, counting for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Atlas Lion underwent medical examinations on site and did recovery work, but did not participate in these two matches won by Morocco.

Back this week at the Carrington training center, Mazraoui will undergo new medical tests before resuming collective training with his teammates. During the pre-season, the Moroccan international missed four of the five friendly matches of Manchester United. After more than a month’s absence, he had returned at the end of August during the 3-2 victory against Burnley and had followed up with two starts against Manchester City and Chelsea. Since then, he has remained on the sidelines during the defeat against Brentford and the victory against Sunderland.

Mazraoui’s return would be a real relief for coach Ruben Amorim, who has the Moroccan in his plans. Last season, the Portuguese technician had lined him up in 38 of his 42 matches. The Atlas Lion participated in the entire 2024-2025 season without injury, missing only the Europa League match against Rangers in January due to illness. Recruited by Erik ten Hag from Bayern in 2024, Mazraoui has only played three matches since the start of this season, while he played 57 matches last season.

Amorim could line up Mazraoui for Sunday’s match against Liverpool. The Moroccan full-back had played on the right wing during the 2-2 draw obtained at Liverpool last January. The Red Devils, currently tenth in the Premier League with three wins, one draw and three defeats, hope to build on their fine 2-0 victory against Sunderland to relaunch a complicated season. After a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea and a first defeat against Crystal Palace, Liverpool is trying to retain its title.
